Kayak instruction

Welcome to kayaking School! Our courses are taught by qualified Blue Spruce instructors with over 12 years of experience teaching whitewater kayaking and are certified by the American Canoe Association. Courses take place on the mighty Rio Grande River in or near Del Norte, Co.

This is the place to start if you are unfamiliar with whitewater kayaks! We start by covering your 5 essentials and making sure you are familiar with and fitted to your equipment. Next we head to the river to cover basic strokes, balance, body positioning, braces, and self-rescue before finishing our day with an introduction to rolling your kayak.

Venue: Del Norte whitewater park

Kayaking Basics

Intro to river kayaking

This is the second step in our kayak progression, for those who are familiar with their equipment and can perform basic maneuvers in a kayak on flat water. We will take you to the river and introduce you to kayaking on moving water, up to class 2. This course builds upon our kayaking basics course, and applies those moves to moving water. In addition, you will also learn about basic hydrology and compound maneuvers like eddy turns and peel outs.

Time: Half day, 9-12 or 1-4

Cost: $200

Kayak roll clinics

The kayak roll can often be the biggest hurdle for new kayakers to pass. In this class our instructor will work with you to break down the roll into individual components and help you to bring it all together. This is the class that unlocks your potential as you move into river running!

Venue: Del Norte Whitewater Park

Time: 2 hours

Cost: $100
